Elon Musk Reports Positive Progress in Neuralink Brain Chip Experiments

Elon Musk announced that Neuralink is advancing to its second test patient as its brain-computer interface technology improves. During an update streamed on X (formerly Twitter), Musk and his team discussed their progress toward making brain implants more common.

“We’re moving to our second Neuralink patient,” Musk stated, aiming for several more by the end of the year. Neuralink’s first brain implant was installed in Noland Arbaugh, who was paralyzed from the shoulders down after a diving accident. Since the operation, Arbaugh has been able to play chess, video games, and learn new languages by controlling a computer cursor with his brain.

The team addressed an issue where threads connecting the implant to Arbaugh’s brain retracted, reducing effectiveness. They plan to implant threads deeper and at varying depths for better signal reception.

Neuralink’s device, about the size of five stacked coins, is implanted by a robotic surgeon. Musk envisions this technology not only restoring functions but also enhancing human capabilities. He aims to increase the data bandwidth between the brain and computers, essential for human-AI symbiosis.

Future goals include providing infrared or ultraviolet vision and telepathic communication. Musk also mentioned an automated process for quick implant installations, akin to “Cyberpunk” or “Deus Ex” scenarios. Additionally, combining Neuralink with the Optimus humanoid robot could offer cybernetic superpowers.

Founded in 2016, Neuralink aims to enhance human abilities, treat neurological disorders, and foster a symbiotic relationship between humans and AI. Musk is part of a broader effort in brain-machine interface research.
